On the 25th of August 2010 I will pilot the 25 foot Bruce Campbell built Christina
"THUNDERBOLT" to recreate her then epic race journey from Cowes to Torquay
which won her the Beaverbrook Trophy and £1000 in the hands of aviation heir Tommy
Sopwith. She will be in the company of other classic boats celebrating 50 years of
this legendary race.
The race in 1961 was the first modern day powerboat race held in Europe since the late
1930’s and was the brainchild of the late Sir Max Aitken. His newspaper the Daily Express
sponsored the race as a means of promoting the safety and relialibility at sea of small
motor craft whilst making offshore passages.
To celebrate the 50th running of the Race this August a fleet of ex race boats from the
60’s and 70’s will hold a Rally at Torquay and will be raising funds for the charity
HELP for HEROES.
The 150 mile race in 1961 took THUNDERBOLT
7 hrs 25 mins in atrocious weather which at times was Gale Force 5.
Thunderbolt’s journey in 2010 is hoped to take place in much better weather and
conditions.
Entries will be minimum £2 per guess with all proceeds going to the
charity HELP for HEROES..
Closing date for entries is Wednesday 25th AUGUST 2010
