Virgin-Atlantic Challenger

Sonny Levi Tribute Event
Saturday 19th August 2017
The Classic Offshore Powerboat Club has been hard at work planning the Sonny Levi
Tribute Event on Saturday 19th August 2017, to celebrate the life of Renato ‘Sonny’ Levi (1926-
2016) the great powerboat designer, racer and constructor who died last November.
One of our confirmed star attractions is VIRGIN ATLANTIC CHALLENGER II. This is
Richard Bransons Blue Riband beating vessel designed by Sonny Levi and now owned and restored
by Dan Stevens, who had the forethought and passion to rescue this iconic boat and return her to
the UK. He was ably assisted by Brian Thornton of Performance Marine who is the Crew Principal of
VACII the team that maintain and run this spectacular example of Sonny’s designs.
She is one of many iconic Levi designs that have promised to show for this event to salute Sonny,
the Godfather of Modern Power Boats. The support and commitment of owners has been
overwhelming considering the work load required to realise their attendance at our event.
The Levi family have been amazing in their support of this event and we can only thank them for
allowing this public showing of what would usually be considered a private time in their lives. They
will be our guests of honour.
We should like as many supporters and Levi designed boats as possible to attend either afloat or
dry displayed ashore, though other contemporary classics will also be made very welcome.

The Sonny Levi Tribute event is on the weekend prior to the Cowes Classic Powerboat Rally and the Cowes-Torquay-Race, so we are planning other events in the Solent area during that week.
Friday 25th – Sunday 27th August 2017
An absolute must for classic boat owners, this year the rally weekend starts in Lymington with the great British tradition of a fish & chip supper on Friday evening. The Solent Sprint on Saturday is the largest annual on the water event where classic power boaters can get wet and burn some fuel, eventually heading to Cowes for some refreshment.
Whilst Sunday gives an opportunity to spectate the legendary Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race.
