Royal Southern Yacht Club

On the weekend of the 24th / 25th of September the ROYAL SOUTHERN YC Hamble are holding their Hamble Classic’s event….usually this is attended soley by Yachts but looking to resurrect their long standing with the powerboat world the club has requested Classic Motor Boats owners to join in the celebration of the Hamble’s history of boat building and Motor cruising….

Two of the first craft invited are Tommy Sopwith’s 1961 Cowes Torquay winning boat “Thunderbolt” a 1961 Bruce Campbell Christina Mk6 and Jon Furley’s unique Levi designed Hazel Christine …which bears a striking minature resemblance to the racer Surfury….

The Royal Southern herewith extended an invitation to owners of Classic Motor Boats in the hope that you would consider bringing them to the event… representatives of an era in which the Hamble river and its boatyards played a major part in the world of Offshore Powerboat Racing in the UK. the number of berths available will be limited so please contact me in the first instance to register your interest.  email me at TOMMYSTBOLT@AOL.COM……Mike

The year is continuing to bring more finds to the surface..just had a message from Matthew Saville
I saw on your website a mention and picture of Monaco Fortuna from the 1961 Cowes Torquay race (…/…/the-morgan-giles-monacos/)

Well she still lives as I own her. Converted to a liveaboard although currently on the hard at Shoreham.

Matthew says that she is for sale and found details when searching for her history…maybe she will find her way back to the water?

and here she is….

Please note there is now a FACEBOOK site for Surfury….SURFURY.The future.  and a new website remodelled on the old Chris Grayer site will soon go live but in the meantime I am pleased to announce that the fund has reached £800….thank you to all and keep the interest flowing..
